Chapter 7: Chameleon

:bulletred:Like an explosion, Lina blasted in a sitting position looking at her friend in disbelief. She couldn’t have been more stunned if Anna had grabbed the clinic’s IV pole and smashed it to her face. “WHAT!?” she screamed, making Anna flinch a little on her sudden aggression. Because honestly, who wouldn’t, her voice had been hostile and loud, loud enough for even the students from outside to hear. “You called my Dad?” she asked, Anna nodded. “Why did you do that?”

“Well, Dr. Fielder says that you might need a hospital attention. So I checked your phone, I saw his number. So I called him. What’s wrong with that?”

Her jaws dropped. This day couldn’t get any worse. She missed her appointment and she’s sure that Cast is still waiting for her while she’s still helpless to do anything to wait for her body to handle herself. “Oh damn it!”

“W-what? Why? What’s the problem with having your Dad around?” The confusion on Anna’s face demands answer but she’s not going to give it to her. She’s at the verge of being busted and the last thing that she wants is an interrogation.

“Big, big problem.”

“Hey guys,” Kris, who was staring through the window interjected. “Check this out.”

“What is it?” asked Edith as she moved to where her twin is.

“Someone Big Time is in the house,” said Kris. “Just look at those cars.”

Andi had also joined them. “Whoa! Those are some classy wheels.”

“Yeah,” Kris agreed. “I wonder who these people are.”

Uh-oh. Lina had an idea who the hell they are and it made her groaned in frustration. It’s too late now, too late for an emergency evacuation or an escape. She has to deal with it. The revelation part was not really much of a problem. It’s dealing with it afterwards which will really bring a lot of headaches. Headaches that are much, much worse than what she’d just had. Well, she can’t do anything about it now. So like a loser in a battlefield, she rested herself back to the comfort of the school clinic’s bed and wait for her fate.

“What’s going on there?” Sandra asked, curious to know what’s seizing her friend’s attention.

“Some guys in expensive suits and six digit cars are on the perimeter.”

Sandra’s eyes lightened up in interest. “Really? What does they look like?”

“There’s a really tall guy, appears to be the Boss, and he’s with some bodyguards in an MIB like outfits and a bombshell secretary.” Kris replied.

“Wow. They sure sound like something.” Anna commented.

“They sound more than something.” Sandra added, who obviously trying to hide her great interest on the situation. She tried not to look like those girls who easily get awestruck by the simplest things that have a price tag exceeding five digits which what exactly she is.

Minutes later, Lina heard a familiar voice from outside and he’s asking where the school clinic is. And unfortunately for her, he was able to find his way to her.

The stunned faces that Sandra and her gang expressed when her family entered was priceless. She could have enjoyed it if it’s not just going to bite her back hard later.

“Lina!” Cairo exclaimed as he unsteadily run to her side. She was instantly filled with worry upon seeing her father. He’s shaking, sweating, and blood had drained from his face, making him look pale and ill.

“Hey Dad,” she breathed meekly.

Cairo kneeled to her bedside, his entire body trembling, comes more evident when he hold her hand where the vibration from him was sent to her. “Oh my princess, are you okay?”

“I’m okay, Dad. Just a stupid headache,” she assured him, somehow trying to ease Cairo from his worries.

However, her father didn’t buy that nor even consider it the slightest. A massive downfall of being an only daughter. “Karen,” he called his personal Secretary, Karen Reynolds.

Karen moved nearer behind Cairo, “Yes sir?”

“Call Dr. Bailey, Dr. Torres, and Dr. Hunt, I don’t care where they are and what they’re doing. I want them available. Now!”

“Right away sir,” she obliged, striding with elegance as she walked out of the clinic to make a call. Karen is a very attractive blonde woman. Standing at almost 6 feet with a beautiful face and hot body, she suits more as a model than a billionaire’s secretary. Her only downfall is her poor eyesight which stuck her into wearing glasses.

“That’s not necessary,” Lina still tried to convince her father. “I’m totally fine.”

“We can’t be so sure,” Cairo insisted.

“No, I’m fine Cai. I’m very much fine,” she said firmly, almost protesting but still manage to keep herself in check. “Karen,” she called over to her Dad’s secretary. “Cancel that call.”

Karen complied immediately and returned to a close by distance behind Cairo. “Are you sure?” Cairo squeezed her hand tighter.

“Yeah, I’ll just need a bath and some peaceful sleeping time.”

“All right,” he said, finally easing up a little. “Get some rest and I’ll just tell your Aunt Mimi that you can’t attend tonight.”

“No, that’s not what I mean. I’ll still go tonight.”

“But you’re not well. Maybe we’ll set your meetings some other time.”

“Dad, I’ve waited three years to finally meet Aunt Mimi and I’m not gonna let one stupid headache ruin that. I’m going to that show tonight and I will dare you to stop me.”

After a few moments of silence, Cairo finally showed his expression of surrender. He’d never won a single argument against her and she’s still keeping that record up to the present. “Alright, but you need someone that will stay close to you all the time in case that headache return. I know that you hate bodyguards, but I guess you’ll be needing one or two right now.”

“How about a friend instead of a bodyguard?” she suggested glancing over on the still petrified Anna.

Cairo followed it and saw the tall young blonde. Considering her suggestion, he straightened up and approached her. Anna immediately trembled when her Dad stood before her. “Are you Miss Braun? The one who contacted me earlier?”

Anna nodded nervously, “Y-yes…sir.”

Cairo took her hand and continued. “I’m Cazimiro Mortis. I’m Lina’s father.”

Lina heard Sandra gasped. Anna just smiled timidly. “It’s an honor to finally meet you, Mr. Mortis.”

“Thank you so much, Ms. Braun.” Cairo said. “Anyway, I hope this is not too much to ask from you after the favor that you’ve done for me and my daughter but can I ask you another request?”

She paused, trying to find a few good words to reply. But the intensity of Cairo’s presence just a step away from her had made her responds an uneasy, “Ah…sure.”

“As you already know, my daughter is not feeling well right now but she wants to attend her stepmother’s little party tonight. Well, I trust her but not her condition and as her Dad I can’t help but to be worried about my only daughter. She doesn’t like bodyguards but I needed someone that can stay close to her as much as possible. Can you do that for me?”

“O-of course. If it’s fine with Lina then I’m cool with it.”

Cairo kissed the back of her hand. “Oh, thank you so much, Ms. Braun. You’re truly a Heaven sent.” He then called his Secretary, “Karen.”

She moved immediately at his left side. “Yes sir?”

“Give this little one an invitation.”

Karen pulled one invitation from her suit and handed it over to Anna. The moment she saw the theme written on the envelope she immediately exclaimed. “Guerra di Bellezze!”

Karen flinched a bit but still retained her composure and calmly asked. “Is there any problem, Ma’am?”

“Nothing,” Anna replied in a gasp. “But isn’t this Mimi Krieg’s fashion show?”

“Yes indeed,” Cairo said. “Mimi is my wife and Lina’s stepmother.”

Anna shot a gape on Lina but she looked away, avoiding her gaze and placed her attention to Karen instead. “Karen, can I have an invitation too.”

“Ma’am, you don’t need an invitation,” she said as she approached closer to her.

She pulled herself up by her elbows to sit herself up in the bed. “It’s not for me, I want to invite someone.”

“Oh.” Karen looked as surprised as everyone in the room on her statement especially her Dad that knows her a lot better than anyone else. Was she really that withdrawn that a revelation of having another friend was that big of a surprise to the people that knows her. “Of course Ma’am,” she handed her an invitation the moment that she was free from her semi-stunned state.

“Thanks Karen.”

“Anna,” Andi called out to her softly. When she turned to her, she started making weird facial expressions, pouting her lips, gesturing to the invitation on her hand.

Anna decoded her message and turned back to Cairo. “Uhm…Mr. Mortis?”

“Yes?”

“Is the invitation solely for me or can I bring someone else? You know? A family or…some friends?”

“The more, the better. You can bring any person that you desire.”

Anna grinned. “Really?”

Cairo nodded a yes to her.

Lina snorted. He might look like he’s giving Anna a favor but she can read her Father’s intention further than that. She knows that at the base of her Dad’s head he was pleading that Anna will consider bringing someone else with her for it would mean more people will be sticking around her aside from just Anna.

Her manipulative Father finally left the poor soul that he easily place under his control and sit at the bed beside her. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“For the last time, Cai, I’m fine. You better quit the fuss already.”

“Alright, I’ll let it go. But promise me, if you feel anything less than fine, drop the idea of going to that party. Okay?”

“Sure.”

“Is there anything else that you need?”

“Actually there’re two.”

Cairo went all ears to hear them out. “What are they?”

“First and most importantly, get the hell out of here.”

Unfazed, he replied, “And the other?”

“I’ll stay here for a while. Well, just until I’ll be able to stand without my knees trembling. And by that time I could use a ride.”

“Can’t you just go with us now?” he suggested.

“Dad, I’m not going to leave this building being carried or being dragged by a wheelchair. So you can kiss that idea goodbye.” Lina said in clenched teeth.

“Fine,” he breathed and grinned to her. He held her shoulder and kissed her forehead. “I’ll be going now. Stay well.”

“Will do, Dad.”

Cairo looked at her one last time and five minutes later, he and his associates were out of the room. She heard engine and cars running from the outside a few minutes afterwards indicating that they’d completely vacated the place.

“Whoa, glad that was over,” she sighed in relief at last, except that there are ten eyeballs that are still staring at her while being surrounded by a cold and eerie silence. “What?”

It was Anna that broke the ice. She approached her and sits on her side, on the same spot where her Father had seated a few minutes ago. “Why didn’t you tell about your parents?”

“I told you about them?” Lina reminded her. “And if I remember it right, I also mentioned their names.”

Anna went silent and scanned through her memories for a second. “Okay, I guess you did. But why didn’t you tell me that you’re rich.”

“I’m not rich,” she told her. “My parents are rich.”

“Yeah right, that’s what well behaved rich kids always say.”

Lina rolled her eyes and then said, “By the way, thank you for agreeing to look after me. I really don’t like having any of my Dad’s dogs around.”

“Believe me, I really don’t mind at all,” Anna said, shuddering as she try to absorb everything she’d just discovered on her personal life.

“Where’s my bag?” Lina remembered all of a sudden.

That’s when Andi snapped since she’s the one that had been carrying Lina’s bag all these time. “I have it,” she said and handed it over to her.

Lina ransacked through her belonging looking for her cellphone. “The hell?” she frowned when she didn’t find it. “Where’s my phone?”

“Oops, sorry,” Anna pulled something from her bag and hand it over to her. It was her cellphone. “I used it to contact Mr. Mortis earlier.”

“Thanks,” she smiled as she took it from her. Lina immediately went to her phonebook and stared on Cast’s phone number for a full minute while deliberating whether to call him or not. And if she does, what is she going to say? She’s more than an hour late from their schedule, an appointment schedule between the two of them that she never once missed, not until now. But realizing that she has nothing to loss anymore whether to call him or not, she decided to do that option that could be more favorable to her.

“I have to go,” she told them and gathered up her belongings. “I’ll see you all at the party.”

Anna and Andi nodded while the three other girls are still at the process of recovering from their state of being petrify.

The driver/bodyguard that he Dad had left for her met her outside the clinic and escorted her out of the school building. And while making their way, she couldn’t help but notice that the eyes of her schoolmates that they pass by couldn’t help but stare towards her.

Finally, after the long agonizing walk they’d made it to the car where he bicycle was already loaded on the trunk.

She pressed ‘Call’ on his number and before the third ring, he answered. “Hello? Lina? Is that you?” he asked in very much worried voice.

“Uhmm…yeah, it’s me.”

He sighed. “Thank God you’re okay. I thought something bad might have happen to you.”

Lina smiled, biting her lower lip. As much as she hated missing their meeting, she sure does enjoy the new kind of attention from Cast. “Why did you think so?”

“Well, the fact that you’re not here with me right now when you’re supposed to be is I guess a good enough reason for me to be worried.”

“It’s not that bad to be worry about.”

“So something bad really happened.”

Oops, wrong choice of words. “No, it was just a headache. Nothing to be worried about.” Lina assured him before he could panic and think of rushing to her school just like what her Father had done. “Painful but very bearable, I’m okay now.”

“You sure?” he asked, doesn’t sound convince.

“I’m sure.” Jeez, why is it that all the men in her life are so overprotective over her? Does she really look that helpless? “Anyway, are you still at our meeting place?”

“Yeah.”

“If it’s still cool with you to wait, I’ll be over there in a minute.”

“Sure, I’m cool with that.”

Lina smiled. Glad that he’s not angry or worried sick for her. Neither of the two she can handle especially the latter part. “And Cast, I’m really sorry for the…”

“Hey,” he hushed her before she could carry on. “Don’t sweat it. Just be here. So…so I can see you.”

She felt her cheeks starting to warm up but controlled herself before she could end up blushing especially that one of her Dad’s dogs is with her. However, she didn’t manage to stop the grin that cracked from her lips. “Sure,” she softly said. “And don’t worry I’ll make it up to you.”

“I’ll expect that,” he said playfully. They both laughed. “I’ll see you here.”

“Okay, see ya.”

Lina told the driver where to go but she also makes sure that they will park a few walk from her desired destination. Her Father’s men are non-asker and they also don’t question orders. However, they are also trained to report to Cairo any significant things about her or anyone related to her Father. She doesn’t want that. Let it be that Cairo will meet Cast in the party and not beforehand for surely he will immediately make a huge fuss about it.

She unloaded her bicycle and told the driver to leave in which he immediately complied without question. Lina walked the remaining distance to where she will meet Cast. She feels kind of uncomfortable doing this, on inviting Cast for her Aunt Mimi’s party. She’s not that all certain if it’s already the right time to introduce Cast to her folks.

But what would be the huge problem about that? Cast is just a good friend that she decided to invite. He’s not her boyfriend or anything…isn’t he?

Lina shook her head fiercely, wagging that thought off of her head. She shouldn’t be thinking of things like that right now especially that their relationship is still at the process of developing. Don’t rush things. She got all the time in the world. Just enjoy what is currently offered and don’t think about uncertain things yet.

Cast was on his usual place when she arrived, carrying that unique demeanor that both attract and repel people but is always attractive to her. He has an exceptional look but what she truly finds attracted from him is that matchless presence of his that is eerie and dark.

Lina smiled. She never thought that she actually prefer the bad boy type. But of course that’s to be expected from her.

Cast’s expression lighten up when he saw her approaching him.

“Hi, sorry I’m late,” she said as she settled down.

“It’s okay,” his sincere voice told her. “What happened?”

“I told you, I’d had a huge headache.”

Cast doesn’t look that convince. He probably sees in her expression that she’s not telling him the entire truth. “And…”

“I fainted.” When his expression didn’t change, she added. “Really, that’s all. There’s nothing to give a fuss about. And the Doctor said I’m cool. So please, quit the worried face already. I’d tolerated too much already from my Dad earlier.”

“Your Dad came?” his eyes widened slightly to her. Of course, that reaction is normal from him for Cast knows the entire story about her identity. Weird, she found it easier to share crucial information about her background to a man who was a complete stranger a month ago than to Anna whom she knows for years already. Maybe one reason is that she knows that Cast will keep it unlike Anna. “I thought you don’t want your school to know who your parents are.”

She sighed, annoyed in the point where she needs to find something to throw a couple of punches. “Well, Anna made a mistake calling him. And then he and his men arrived causing a huge ruckus there.”

Cast chuckled. “Was it that bad?”

She nodded, pouting her tiny lips. “Bad is an understatement, it was unbearable. It’s like all the camouflage that I’d worked so hard for three years vanished just like that.”

“I think its better that way. You can’t keep who you really are forever.”

“I just don’t want to stand out. I like to keep my school life simple for myself. And my family background is going against that.”

“You have a point. They say that money talks, and a lot of money sings and dance.”

Lina didn’t hide disgust about that fact. “I really hate that.”

“It’s human nature. I guess we have to deal with it.”

“Well, enough of that,” she dismissed the annoying topic and hands over to him the invitation.

“What’s this?” he asked, checking the envelope.

“It’s an invitation for my Aunt Mimi’s party tonight.”

“Guerra di Bellezze.” His right eyebrow rose up, an expression that he always makes when something had caught his interest.

“Join me,” she appealed. “I would love to have you around.”

“Are you sure?” he glanced to her, smiling wryly. “I mean your parents won’t mind?”

“I’m sure they won’t,” she assured him. “They actually want me to invite some of my friends. And of course, you’re on top of the list.”

Cast smiled on that, and then turned serious again when his attention diverted back to the invitation. “But you know what will happen if I attend. People invited there certainly know who I am, and I’m sure that it’ll cause some mess when they see me.”

“Let them deal with that. It’s their problem. It’s none of our concerns.”

Cast shrugged. “I guess you’re right. Sure, I’ll be there.”

Seattle, Washington
October
Monday, 8pm

:bulletblue:“Guerra di Bellezze?” Lucius Myne raised his eyebrow when he read what was written on the invitation. “This is Miranda Kriegs, right?”

His little brother currently arranging his tie in front of the mirror glanced to him through the reflection. “Yeah.”

“Seriously? I thought you don’t like these people?”

“I’m just attending their party, Luch,” he said, turning to him. “It doesn’t mean that my opinion about them had changed.”

“What about that girl? She’s one of them, right?”

“Barely, she’s only half of it. And of course, she’s an exemption.” Cast made the last adjustments on his clothing then placed his watch on his wrist.

“I don’t want this to come from me but…are you sure about her? I mean, I know a lot of matter of facts about her that you’re probably not aware yet and I may say some of them are…” he tried to find the appropriate words for it, something which is not offending. Lucius doesn’t want to take the chance of irritating his younger brother. “…not that pleasant.”

“I know enough, and I also know that they are not that good,” he smirked, as if he found those not so good things about that girl named Lina amusing than disgusting. And the next words that he says verify that. “That’s why I like her.”

“And you’re saying I’m a masochist,” Lucius crossed his arms on his chest, chuckling as he watch his younger brother move his way out of the room. “Then what are you?” he taunted.

“Your brother of course,” he said and exited the room.

Lucius shook his head. If he didn’t witness it firsthand, he wouldn’t believe it himself. His entire life, he thought that his little brother is an immovable rock. He will never expect in a million years that he can be bended especially by the hand of a 17 year old little girl. Looks like God has a sense of humor after all.

However, he is aware of the dangers affixed with this current turn of events. If that girl gets more attached to Cast, it will surely trigger a lot of dormant consequences that their family had tried so hard to keep in control.

Worst, it occurred on this point of time where the branches of the Myne[pronounce: Ma-yen] Family are starting to mobilize especially those that are under his liege. They are the hardest to control. And though he is their current leader, their loyalties are still more attached to the Youngest Myne who no longer has interest on practicing authority over them, rather than to him.

If only Cast would agree on his plans, then all these problems will be solved with minor unfavorable outcomes. However, what Cast had in mind is to build a new life where no one from his roots is involved. And with Cast, that’s not impossible but it doesn’t mean that it’s free from consequences. On the contrary, the price to pay on what his little brother desires is much dearer.

Lucius shudder, he will rather be anyone else even the very person he despise than that girl that tame Cast’s heart. The future that is waiting for her is full of trials worst than hell. And if that happen, there’s no way that Cast will keep quiet about it. He will surely do everything and consider all options, including doing that thing that he’d been restraining for so long.

He took his phone. Lucius knows that he better get ready. It’s better to be hysterical than to be sorry in the end. He dialed his number, and though he despised him so much for what he’d done to him in the past, he is still a family to him and to Cast. When things get heavy, his aid will always be necessary.

“What is it?” his stern voice answered on the other line.

“Armageddon.” He hated his guts as much as he hated his. But when it comes to Cast they can always rely on each other. “Get ready Mitch. Things are gonna get nasty.”
